Before this assignment, I had little prior knowledge about copy-righting and cyber-bullying but I didnt think it could get this specific. Copy-righting examples were very specific but after I read the question and found out the answers, everything seemed fair and only made sense. Since I've been in college, the only thing that I've heard from my professors were to not steal anyone's materials. I wouldn't know what to do if I contribute something useful to the public and have someone else take credit for it. As I gaze over the cheat sheet that was given, I was amazed at how many steps you would have to use to be safe from copy-righting infringements but I understood that it was very much fair.
I did enjoy the facts about copyright and fair-use policies along with the BullyingUK. It would be interesting to see how they come up with the specific guildelines to using other people's materials and how much of it you can actually use. My favorite parts were about the use of music and motion media, I didn't know any of this information prior to this blog. Cyber-bullying is something that I know a little more about. Basically, it is exactly what it sounds like. Th internet is a huge source of information and networking for our students and for us, it is a dangerous place. We as teachers need to tell our students about all the ways people will use the internet to harm others. The internet can be an outlet for anything nowadays, even bullying.
The information that I've learned today is something that needs to be passed along to all my future students. Like I stated earlier, internet is an important source and place for students to go and we need to learn how to use it without abusing it. Whether it is borrowing someone's work or networking with friends, there are proper ways to doing it and the websites given along with the cheat sheet are good examples of how to do it. It is nice to see someone put a group together on Facebook to stop cyber-bullying, this is a clear example on how to use an internet source for good a reason to the max!
I love this sentence from your blog, "The internet is a huge source of information and networking for our students and for us, it is a dangerous place". It epitomizes this weeks lesson on copyrights, cyberbullying, netiquete, and safe use. I agree whole-heartedly with what you state about informing students on how personal information on the internet can be used against them. Its is the age of information, but lets make sure that that information comes with caution.
ReplyDeleteThe social networking sites have screwed up America. We have totally created cyber bullying by using these sites. I wonder what percent of all the sites online are either porn or social networking? How many are education? I think that we could stop cyber bullying if we monitor all of these types of sites and put some restriction on them.
